Virtual GLC Café Series: ETD Review Checklist

account and attend various events  from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access http://virtual.glc.vt.edu/. Please take the time now to review the links below in reference to downloading the appropriate software and creating an account prior to logging into the vGLC.
In order to use the vGLC for the first time, please follow these basic instructions below:
1.     In a web browser, go to: http://openlife01.cc.vt.edu:9500/wifi
2.     Click the CREATE ACCOUNT link at the top right of the webpage
  • Enter VT email
  • Enter name
  • Enter password
  • Select avatar type
  • Select Create
 3.     Download Imprudence Software 1.4.0-beta-2 Windows
or 1.4.0-beta-2 Mac (Intel)
 4. Open/Start Imprudence Viewer/Icon (purple hand)
  • Go to grid manager
  • Click the Add New Grid button below the Select a Grid menu box
  • In the Grid text box, type: virtual_glc 
  • In the Grid Name text box, type: Virtual GLC
  • In the Login URI text box, type: http://openlife01.cc.vt.edu:9500/
  • Select OK

Graduate Education Week 2013, March 25-29

Graduate students and members of the Virginia Tech community are invited to participate in Graduate Education Week events from March 25 through March 29. Workshops, research symposium, student contests, photo and art display, and a variety of social events mark the 13th annual Graduate Education Week.

Graduate School Invites Citizen Scholar Applications

The Graduate School invites applications for the Citizen Scholar Award from currently enrolled graduate students who have used their knowledge and research skills to benefit society in any way, and whose effort on the project involved 16 hours or more of community service. Recipients of the award will be recognized during Graduate Education Week on Monday, March 25 from 4-5:30 in the Graduate Life Center. 

During the award ceremony each award recipient will have a chance to explain his or her project briefly, using one power point slide. Learn more about the Citizen Scholar Experience (CSE) initiative>>

Applicants should send their name, project title and brief description of the project to Associate Dean Rosemary Blieszner, rmb@vt.edu by March 8.

Nominations for Distinguished Graduate Alumni Achievement Award

Would you like to acknowledge outstanding accomplishments of an alumnus or alumna from your master’s or doctoral graduate program?  The Graduate School and the Alumni Association select the Distinguished Graduate Alumni Achievement Award recipient each year from those nominated.  We will accept one nomination per department until March 22, 2013 at 5 pm. The nomination requires submission of two letters and the nominee’s full vita. Submissions in the form of pdf files are preferred and should be emailed as an attachment to grads@vt.edu.
 
If you submitted a nomination last year, it is being considered again this year (will continue in consideration for up to three years) but you may update that nomination if desired.

Dean Diversity and McNair Assistantship Nominations Open

Dean’s Diversity Assistantships

Dean’s Diversity Assistantships are funding opportunities targeted at recruiting underrepresented students. Departments are asked to nominate prospective students for these funds.

Students are paid the regular departmental assistantship rate and in-state tuition; the out-of-state fee is waived. Students are responsible for paying their comprehensive fees.

Master’s and doctoral level students are eligible for this award. The number of awards varies from year to year.

A maximum of three nominations per department. Preference is given to students who are not at Virginia Tech as undergraduates.

To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents entering their first year of graduate study.

NOMINATIONS must be made from a faculty member and are due by March 1, 2013. Your PID and password are required to access the nomination form.

McNair Assistantship

This assistantship is for one year with departmental matching required for the second year. It is restricted to students who were Ronald E. McNair Scholars as undergraduates. Students are paid the regular departmental assistantship rate and in-state tuition. The out-of-state fee is waived. Students are responsible for paying their comprehensive fees. Master’s and doctoral level students are eligible for this award. One award will be made.

Each spring, the Graduate School Recruiting Office calls for nominations for the McNair Assistantship. To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents entering their first year of graduate study.
