Electronic Thesis & Dissertation Webinar

The Graduate School will be having it’s first ever  Electronic Thesis & Dissertation Webinar.  A webinar is a web conferencing and eLearning environment in real time.  Webinar participants will need a computer with Internet access, microphone and speakers to fully participate.

When:  Wednesday, April 17th
Time:  12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Where:  From your remote desktop

For those students who are not able to attend the workshops at the Graduate School, Blacksburg campus, this webinar is especially for you.  You will gain first hand-knowledge in what the Graduate School looks for when reviewing an ETD, as well as common mistakes and errors, formatting templates and a brief Q&A session.  Catch mistakes before your initial review and save yourself time getting your degree awarded.  If you would like to be included in this webinar workshop, you MUST let Jodi jodilynn@vt.edu  know. ETD Workshops

The Graduate School will be holding four ETD workshops in the next two weeks.  Once the workshops conclude, we will have staff available in GLC 120 to answer more specific questions. (Please have your ETD on a flash drive for reviewing purposes).

Virtual GLC Café Series: Graduation 101

The  Virtual Graduate Life Center (vGLC), is an environment where you can create an

account and attend various events  from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access http://virtual.glc.vt.edu/. Please take the time now to review the links below in reference to downloading the appropriate software and creating an account prior to logging into the vGLC.
In order to use the vGLC for the first time, please follow these basic instructions below:
1.     In a web browser, go to: http://openlife01.cc.vt.edu:9500/wifi
2.     Click the CREATE ACCOUNT link at the top right of the webpage
  • Enter VT email
  • Enter name
  • Enter password
  • Select avatar type
  • Select Create
 3.     Download Imprudence Software 1.4.0-beta-2 Windows
or 1.4.0-beta-2 Mac (Intel)
 4. Open/Start Imprudence Viewer/Icon (purple hand)
  • Go to grid manager
  • Click the Add New Grid button below the Select a Grid menu box
  • In the Grid text box, type: virtual_glc 
  • In the Grid Name text box, type: Virtual GLC
  • In the Login URI text box, type: http://openlife01.cc.vt.edu:9500/
  • Select OK

Graduate Advising Matters: A Faculty Forum

The Graduate School is hosting the first of what is hoped to become a series of conversations among faculty about the rewards and challenges of graduate advising.  The goal is to create a supportive space for faculty of all experience levels to come together and share and brainstorm strategies.

For this first discussion, the Graduate School invited seven faculty who have won the award for excellence in graduate advising and who will start the event by answering questions posed by  moderator Dr. Janet Rankin, associate dean of the Graduate School and professor in human nutrition, food and exercise. This will be followed by an open discussion of advising case studies and topics generated by  participants. 

All faculty are invited and encouraged to attend. Registration is requested, but not required, to help organizers estimate refreshment amounts needed.

Date, time and place of the event:
Tuesday, April 16th, from 3:30-5:00pm in the multipurpose room in the GLC 
Light refreshments will be served.
