Virtual GLC Café Series: Defending Student Status and Final Exam Submission via ESS

Graduate School staff will discuss Defending Student Student Status and Submission of the Final Examination via the Electronic Signature System and the time line of the submission process.

The  Virtual Graduate Life Center (vGLC), is an environment where you can create an
account and attend various events  from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access http://virtual.glc.vt.edu/. Please take the time now to review the links below in reference to downloading the appropriate software and creating an account prior to logging into the vGLC.
 In order to use the vGLC for the first time, please follow these basic instructions below:
1.     In a web browser, go to: http://openlife01.cc.vt.edu:9500/wifi
2.     Click the CREATE ACCOUNT link at the top right of the webpage
  • Enter VT email
  • Enter name
  • Enter password
  • Select avatar type
  • Select Create
 3.     Download Imprudence Software 1.4.0-beta-2 Windows
or 1.4.0-beta-2 Mac (Intel)
 4. Open/Start Imprudence Viewer/Icon (purple hand)
  • Go to grid manager
  • Click the Add New Grid button below the Select a Grid menu box
  • In the Grid text box, type: virtual_glc 
  • In the Grid Name text box, type: Virtual GLC
  • In the Login URI text box, type: http://openlife01.cc.vt.edu:9500/
  • Select OK

Call for Nominations for Graduate Student Awards

The Graduate School would like to encourage nominations for the following student awards: 

•   Outstanding Dissertation– two awards, one in math/science/engineering and one in social sciences/business/humanities, $1000

•   Graduate Student Teaching Excellence- $1000

•   Graduate Student Service Excellence– $1000

•   Graduate Man and Woman of the Year– $500

•   Outstanding Interdisciplinary Program Student– $500

•   Outstanding Graduate Student– one master’s and one doctoral student per      college, $500

 All winners will be recognized during the Graduate Education Week banquet on March 28 as well as receive a plaque/certificate and monetary award. More information about criteria, forms, and process for nomination can be found on our web page at:
 
 

The deadline for the first four awards listed above is February 1, 2013 at 5 pm while the last two are due by February 15 at 5 pm.

The Virtual Graduate Life Center (vGLC) extends VT’s graduate-education community from campus to computer.  Using avatars they have created, visitors to the vGLC can currently visit with Graduate-School staff about general academic questions; find Grad-School forms and policy information; consult with the Graduate Student Ombudsperson; attend virtual seminars and workshops; socialize with other vGLC visitors; and explore the vGLC space, which mirrors the real-world Graduate Life Center on the Blacksburg campus.

Preview Weekend Nominations Open

The primary objectives of Preview Weekend are to:

  • Familiarize prospective graduate students with Virginia Tech graduate programs, the campus, the Blacksburg community, and resources for student support and financial support.
  • Provide prospective students the opportunity to interact with Virginia Tech faculty, administrators, and graduate students.
  • Provide information to help prospective students make an informed decision about graduate education at Virginia Tech.

Eligible participants must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents residing in the U.S. who have applied for admission and have been accepted to Virginia Tech.

Student must be from an underrepresented population.

The Graduate School will provide housing, food, and funds to support students’ travel. If a student is chosen, the host department is expected to work in collaboration with the Graduate School to provide high quality programs including opportunities to meet with faculty and students in the department.

Nominations are open from November 15, 2011 through January 13, 2012. There is a maximum of three nominations per department. Contact Dannette Beane at dannette@vt.edu or 540-231-6529 for more information.

Diversity Scholar Nominations are open

What is a Diversity Scholar?

Diversity scholars are graduate students who specialize in and advocate for the awareness, knowledge, and skills associated with diversity and inclusion in the Graduate School and greater community. A diversity scholar’s goal is to create dialogue, provide advocacy, and implement change for a more diverse and inclusive experience for all graduate students, faculty, staff, and administrators. This involvement can take place in many forms and can be specific to a particular curriculum or department, or it can be more global.

Diversity scholars exhibit the following strengths and knowledge in their work:

  • Multicultural Competencies
  • Advocacy Competencies
  • Identity Development Models
  • Communication Competencies
  • Conflict Resolution Skills

How do I become a Diversity Scholar?

Diversity Scholars are chosen based upon their competency in diversity and inclusion, knowledge about cultural differences, and belief in the Virginia Tech “Principles of Community.” A nomination is required and is evaluated by a committee based upon several factors seen in congruence with the Inclusive Excellence model adopted by the University Strategic Plan.

To demonstrate competency in diversity and inclusion, applicants are encouraged to take GRAD 5984: Diversity and Inclusion for A Global Society or to demonstrate knowledge based on past experience (e.g., work with diversity and/or inclusion) or course work (e.g., counselor education, sociology). Otherwise, students can be nominated by a faculty member or community member. An interview is required for finalists.

How much time will I have to commit as a Diversity Scholar?

The commitment takes place in the spring semester. There will be bi-monthly or monthly group meetings and training sessions, which will be scheduled with group input. The year’s involvement will conclude with a final presentation of projects in late April or May. Each meeting will last approximately one hour.

Will I be compensated for the time I commit to being a Diversity Scholar?

Each diversity scholar will receive a one-time stipend of $300 for full participation in the program. Additionally, if a student presents his/her project at a conference, the ORDI will assist with the conference fees and/or travel, with approval. In addition, students will earn completion certificates at the end of the term.

GLC Open House 2012


The Graduate School will host an open house in the nationally recognized, award-winning Graduate Life Center (GLC) on Friday, October 19, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend to learn more about the services and spaces the facility offers.

The open house will include the following activities and opportunities:

  • Tours of the GLC, including residential floors
  • Scavenger hunt with prizes
  • Information about graduate-student services in the GLC, including career advising, writing support, statistical consulting, library services and counseling
  • Graduate-student art, photo and writing contest
  • Corn-hole tournament on the GLC lawn
  • Fun photo ops with props
  • Visits with GLC staff
  • Light refreshments provided by ABP

The GLC is the first graduate facility of its kind in the nation. A joint venture of the Graduate School, Housing and Residence Life, and Student Centers and Activities, the center offers academic, administrative, professional, residential, and social spaces to promote graduate education and graduate community.

Graduate School Student Services Area New Business Hours

The Graduate School’s student services and advising area (120 GLC suite) will operate with new business hours starting Oct 1. On Wednesdays the service area will open at 9:30am and close at 6:00pm. This is a pilot program for the fall semester; at the end of fall we will evaluate the impact of this change and decide whether to continue with altered hours or return to an 8-5/M-F schedule. A secure drop-box has been installed at the entrance to the service area for students, faculty and staff to drop off forms when our service area is closed.
