Meetings, Workshops, & Events

  1. New GPD Orientation and Networking Meeting

Friday, September 8, 2:00-3:30 p.m.

Graduate Life Center Room B

The Graduate School will host this orientation and networking meeting to welcome new Graduate Program Directors into their role, share valuable resources and information, and connect new GPDs with Graduate School colleagues and fellow GPDs to add to their support system. This event is open to GPDs only. Please indicate your interest in attending by completing this short registration form and add any questions or topics you would like to have covered: https://gs.vt.edu/ewall2023. Light refreshments will be served.

  1. Fall GPD Meetings Scheduled

The fall meeting schedule has been set for graduate program directors (GPDs). Meetings will take place via Zoom 1:30-2:30 on September 13, October 11, November 9 and December 13. The Graduate School hosts these meetings to disseminate timely information, provide a forum for the sharing of best practices, and seek input on current issues and strategic initiatives with the aim of supporting and strengthening graduate education through this community of practice. If you haven’t received a meeting invitation and zoom link yet, please contact Carrie Mayer at caduke2@vt.edu.

  1. GHS Panelist Training for Interested Faculty

Thursday, September 14, 12:00-1:00 pm via Zoom

The Graduate Honor System relies on trained faculty and graduate students to hear academic integrity violation cases. It takes a one-hour training to become a panelist, and after that faculty and graduate students can serve on preliminary review and review panels. The Graduate School invites faculty to become panelists to help hear cases and actively contribute to the ongoing conversation about standards of academic integrity. Please indicate your interest in attending by completing this short registration: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeCtYx4s7Mc_zC8dSrAH1IDMt7zmdbBBmv73YjhfWhHw1etg/viewform.

  1. Information on Graduate Application, Admissions Process

In accordance with the Supreme Court’s recent decision that applies to undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs, an applicant’s race will no longer be visible to or considered by those making graduate admissions decisions. Therefore, the race and ethnicity fields have been removed from view in Slate Reader, Queries, and Reports. Mailings to prospective students and applicants that relied upon race and/or ethnicity fields have been stopped and the recipient lists updated to remove those fields. The Graduate School remains committed to the holistic application review process we have employed since 2017.

  1. Updates to Graduate School’s DC Area Communications

The Graduate School is changing its practices of distributing communications to graduate students enrolled in the Washington, D.C., metro area programs. Starting on August 21, 2023, a weekly newsletter has replaced sporadic messages from multiple sources. This newsletter shares administrative announcements, events, services, job opportunities, and requests for research participants, tailored for graduate students enrolled in programs in the greater Washington, D.C., metro area. The content is compiled and curated by the Graduate School from submissions by service providers, event organizers, student organizations, and other stakeholders in graduate education. Posting requests may be submitted online at https://gs.vt.edu/weeklylistserv by Friday at 5 p.m. before the Monday on which the posting is to be included in the newsletter. The newsletter is distributed on Mondays through dc-gradstudents-g@vt.edu, a google group managed by the Graduate School. All graduate students enrolled at any of the Washington, D.C. Metro Area campus locations (campus 4) and select virtual students in the area are automatically subscribed based on their enrollment. The subscription list will be updated each semester after the last day to enroll in classes. Other individuals or virtual graduate programs who wish to receive the weekly newsletter should complete the subscription request form at https://gs.vt.edu/weeklylistservsubscribe.

  1. Seeking Information on Professional Development for Graduate Students

The Graduate School is working on creating a new professional development badging program for graduate students that will include workshops and sessions on career development, leadership, communication, teamwork, professionalism, etc. To help guide our program offerings (see what may be missing, what we don’t need to cover, etc), we would like to learn what graduate departments are already doing for graduate students. Please take a few moments to complete this form by September 15: https://forms.gle/gNDS26UxiAbzuR3s9. If you have questions, email Lauren Surface at lkeister@vt.edu.
