Diversity Scholar Nominations are open

What is a Diversity Scholar?

Diversity scholars are graduate students who specialize in and advocate for the awareness, knowledge, and skills associated with diversity and inclusion in the Graduate School and greater community. A diversity scholar’s goal is to create dialogue, provide advocacy, and implement change for a more diverse and inclusive experience for all graduate students, faculty, staff, and administrators. This involvement can take place in many forms and can be specific to a particular curriculum or department, or it can be more global.

Diversity scholars exhibit the following strengths and knowledge in their work:

  • Multicultural Competencies
  • Advocacy Competencies
  • Identity Development Models
  • Communication Competencies
  • Conflict Resolution Skills

How do I become a Diversity Scholar?

Diversity Scholars are chosen based upon their competency in diversity and inclusion, knowledge about cultural differences, and belief in the Virginia Tech “Principles of Community.” A nomination is required and is evaluated by a committee based upon several factors seen in congruence with the Inclusive Excellence model adopted by the University Strategic Plan.

To demonstrate competency in diversity and inclusion, applicants are encouraged to take GRAD 5984: Diversity and Inclusion for A Global Society or to demonstrate knowledge based on past experience (e.g., work with diversity and/or inclusion) or course work (e.g., counselor education, sociology). Otherwise, students can be nominated by a faculty member or community member. An interview is required for finalists.

How much time will I have to commit as a Diversity Scholar?

The commitment takes place in the spring semester. There will be bi-monthly or monthly group meetings and training sessions, which will be scheduled with group input. The year’s involvement will conclude with a final presentation of projects in late April or May. Each meeting will last approximately one hour.

Will I be compensated for the time I commit to being a Diversity Scholar?

Each diversity scholar will receive a one-time stipend of $300 for full participation in the program. Additionally, if a student presents his/her project at a conference, the ORDI will assist with the conference fees and/or travel, with approval. In addition, students will earn completion certificates at the end of the term.

Graduate School Student Services Area New Business Hours

The Graduate School’s student services and advising area (120 GLC suite) will operate with new business hours starting Oct 1. On Wednesdays the service area will open at 9:30am and close at 6:00pm. This is a pilot program for the fall semester; at the end of fall we will evaluate the impact of this change and decide whether to continue with altered hours or return to an 8-5/M-F schedule. A secure drop-box has been installed at the entrance to the service area for students, faculty and staff to drop off forms when our service area is closed.

Send comments to grads@vt.edu.

Graduate School student services area closed for walk-ins on Tuesday, Sep 18

The Graduate School student services and advising area (120 GLC) will undergo some changes on Tuesday, Sep 18, requiring that we close the service area to walk-in traffic. We ask all students to try to avoid visiting the Graduate School on this day unless they need urgent in-person assistance. Email and phone services will be uninterrupted and accommodations will be made to see students in the Graduate School lobby as needed. Please stop by to see us after Tuesday to see our new, more student-friendly layout!

Electronic Signature System Launched for Final Examinations and ETD Submission

I’m pleased to announce the launch of the Electronic Signature Approval system for final examinations and Electronic Thesis/Dissertations. This system allows for the scheduling of final examinations, signing of the final examination card and upload of the ETD using the VT PID and password.  Now that we have achieved the goal of a "secure" electronic signature and "secure" process, the Graduate School will be moving toward greater use of electronic processes.

Effective Monday, September 17, 2012, all final non-thesis and thesis/dissertation oral examinations must be scheduled through this Electronic Signature Approval system. Students will sign into the Electronic Signature Approval system to request their final examination and upload their ETD (if a thesis/dissertation student). Advisory committee members will sign into the Electronic Signature Approval system to approve the final examination request as well as electronically sign the examination card (notification sent to the @vt.edu email address).

Students who have already requested the scheduling of their final examination using the paper form will not need to resubmit through the Electronic Signature Approval system. Final examinations for students on Defending Student Status will still be requested using the paper form. Preliminary examinations will still be requested using the paper form.

As you are aware, the final examination request must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the examination date and the Electronic Signature System (ESS) was set up accordingly.  The ESS does not allow a student to request an exam date less than two weeks from the examination request submission date.  It is important that students plan in advance with their advisory committee to ensure that all advisory committee members can attend the examination for the date/time requested.  If any member of the advisory committee does not approve the final examination request the student will need resubmit with a new date/time.  Requesting a room in the examination request does not reserve the room; students must reserve the room through the building room coordinator.

Once an examination request is approved by the advisory committee and the Graduate School, an email confirmation will be sent to the student, advisory committee and department staff coordinator with notification of the official examination scheduling. An examination should not be held without receipt of the notification email from the Graduate School. Please contact the Graduate School before the examination if you have not received a scheduling notification email.

The Electronic Signature Approval system can be accessed online at https://gradexam.stl.vt.edu/pages/login.php <blocked::https://gradexam.stl.vt.edu/pages/login.php> .

An Electronic Signature Approval system guide can be found online at https://secure.graduateschool.vt.edu/GSITWiki/Wiki.jsp?page=UniversityTools <blocked::https://secure.graduateschool.vt.edu/GSITWiki/Wiki.jsp?page=UniversityTools> .

Questions regarding the use of the Electronic Signature Approval system should be directed to Graduate Admissions and Academic Progress (540-231-8636; gradappl@vt.edu).

Workshop IV Invitation for Future Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Programs (IGEPs) – September 27, 2012

The Graduate School is hosting workshop IV for faculty considering Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program (IGEP) submissions in the future. IGEPs are supported by the Graduate School and are intended to promote and sustain interdisciplinary graduate research and education at Virginia Tech. Each IGEP addresses a major fundamental problem or complex societal issue requiring an interdisciplinary team of scholars.

In its first year, 17 IGEP proposals were submitted with participation from 183 faculty, 7 colleges, and 56 departments. On its second year, nineteen IGEP proposals were submitted with participation from 227 faculty, 8 colleges, and 58 departments. Next year, three additional IGEPs will be funded. The 3rd call for IGEP proposals (for Fall 2013) was announced in April 2012 following workshop III with a deadline for November 12, 2012 to allow for more time for the development phase.

Workshop IV for future IGEP proposals will focus on the components of a successful proposal from the perspective of both IGEP proposal reviewers and faculty with currently funded IGEPs. Workshop IV will be held on September 27, 2012 from 11:00 am- 1:00 pm in The Graduate Life Center (GLC) room F.  Please join us!
